Milk, maybe it doesn’t do a body good?

cows milk

Milk, most drink it, use it, believe in it. Recent research however shows that just like many foods we all believe in, the health benefits of drinking milk is quite probably a myth.

Cows milk has really become a staple in the western diet. You would be hard pressed to find a western refrigerator that does not at least pay homage to dairy products, especially milk. Many physicians even recommend that women who are susceptible to fractures, and children with growing bones drink a good amount of milk daily.

However a recent Swedish study seems to show exactly the opposite, at least for women consuming three glasses or more of milk daily. Turns out if you do so, you are doubling your chance of dying, especially from heart disease. Also, you are increasing, not decreasing, your chance for broken bones. I will leave the whys to the experts, but I suspect the heart disease is related to fat, which milk contains plenty of, and broken bones has to do with calcium absorption, which is more complicated than just drinking milk that contains calcium.

Here in America, we have milk and dairy products pretty much shoved down our throats from the time we are little children. A lot of that has to do with the dairy lobby, which strangely, is one of the more powerful groups that lobby our lawmakers. Those farmers also spend a lot on advertising which has everyone brainwashed over the great benefit of anything dairy.

So what can you use instead of cows milk.?  Try almond milk  soy milk and just about any other thing you can now try in the dairy section. You can even make your own almond milk and its super easy. As far as taste goes, yes, it will taste different at first, but after a day or two, you will not notice it at all.

As with anything, moderation is good. I have seen great benefit from totally eliminating dairy from my diet, and I attribute at least some of my weight loss success to abolishing cows milk from my frig. At the very least everyone should be aware that something we all thought was really healthy may not be, and proceed with caution and moderation.

Breakfast of champions? Not Always!

We have all heard this a thousand times. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But what if those healthy breakfast foods are actually make you hungry all day, and even making it almost impossible to lose weight.? It’s true, some breakfast foods are better than others, and some breakfast cereals , even some marketed as healthy, are making it difficult to lose weight.

Its all because of this little thing called the Glycemic Index. As it turns out, foods that are high on the Glycemic Index cause your blood sugar to gyrate, and if you eat them for breakfast, you are going to be hungry . In fact, recent research suggests that you will be hungry all day. So how do you know what to eat? Don’t look at the marketing for cereals, because Special K for example, is on the high end of the index at around 71. They could really write something like”eat this and be hungry all day” but I don’t see that happening any time soon!

The story of how Kellogg’s and other companies convinced us all to eat cold cereal with milk for breakfast is a fascinating one. I suspect over the years they have become more sugary, and less nutritious, but there are still some good choices out there. The thing is you cannot really tell how high glycemic something us just by looking at the box. Anything with lots of sugar or corn (think corn flakes) are going to be high on the index. But so will other cereals like bran flakes. The best are the cereals that you usually think of as being really healthy, such as

All Bran or bran buds

Uncle Sam

Old fashioned Oatmeal (not instant)

It might be just suggestion, but I have experimented and found that eating low glycemic in the morning can really effect my cravings during the day, and even in to the evening. There are lists all over the internet with information about the glycemic index and how it’s sabotaging your ability to lose weight. Besides breakfast, avoid these other very high index foods:white potato, rice crackers, all manner of chips etc. Busting those food cravings by avoiding high index foods will go a long way towards helping you reach your weight loss goals over the long term

Its official: eating breakfast is good for your heart!

You have always been told that eating breakfast is good. But now it’s official. Eating breakfast is good for your heart. Researchers in Britain reviewed information gathered from healthcare professionals (27000) and found that breakfast eaters were significantly less likely to suffer a heart attack than non breakfast eaters.

There are a few possible explanations for the positive effect of breakfast. For one thing the breakfast group had lower cholesterol and triglycerides than the non breakfast group. Everyone agrees that this is important. Eating breakfast seems to also reduce stress in the body as morning eaters also have lower blood pressure and other measures of good health, so eat breakfast!

But alas! What to eat!  Does it matter? Eating anything is better than eating nothing, but eating something really healthy can set the day off right. Not only that, but I find if I get really full at breakfast, I am less hungry during the day, which is one of the strategies that helped me lose so much weight.

So, my perfect breakfast is Uncle Sam cereal or All Bran cereal with berries and soy or almond milk. If I eat enough I can make it to lunch without snacking. If I need a snack it’s fruit…

Sounds  simple, but trust me, if you are doing this every day you need simple. I drive 20 miles each way to work every day, and there is no time for elaborate meals in the morning.People that budget too much time to these tasks end up giving up when they get too busy, which is the main cause of diet failure.

So eat  breakfast and live longer and better!
