The right breakfast= weight loss

Ever feel like you are making an effort to lose weight by eating right, but are not making any headway? We have all been there. But let me show you something that will help explain why success comes easily with our system.

When people approach me with the ” how did you do it” question the first thing I ask is,”what do you eat for breakfast?” More often than not it’s cold cereal. A few “big food” companies dominate the market for cold cereal, and it’s a very popular choice. I have to admit, early mornings are a rush for me, and there is typically no time for anything but a bowl of cereal.

Ahhh, but which one? Your choice, I believe, makes a huge difference in your weight loss success. There are many many cereals that claim to be healthy. They have all kinds of things written on the front like”23 grams of whole grains” or “high in omega three”

Don’t believe it!

Hate to say it but this is almost always nothing but marketing hype!

Don’t even bother with the front, look at the side, and you will understand why some cereals, even supposedly healthy ones don,t really help you to lose weight, while others do. The following two cereals, one of which is actually pretty healthy , explain this idea very easily.

These two cereals are raisin bran and all bran, and both are readily available at just about any supermarket in the US. All Bran, which has about one third the sugar per serving and more fiber is the much healthier choice.   In fact, the non US version sold in the UK and Australia, has no added sugar at all, which makes it even healthier.

So what’s the big difference? Sugar. One has 20 grams of sugar per serving, the other 8 grams. 12 grams doesn’t seem like much, but look at it this way, 12 x 365 is 4380 grams, which over a year is almost 8 lbs difference.! And guess where that 8 lbs of sugar is going!

So let’s dwell for the moment on the benefits of changing what we eat for breakfast and consuming so many less extra empty sugar calories. For one thing, we have room now for more calories of nutritious foods, so we can eat more….not less, and feel fuller all day and all year. Another benefit is when you feel like you have to really cheat, like a birthday party, there is the possibility of doing so without gaining weight, because you have a little extra room so to speak.

The point of empty sugar is crucial. Empty means calories with nothing attached. A fool will tell you that fruit has sugar, and it does, but it also has fiber and weight which makes you feel full. The sugar added to drinks and cereals etc is not adding anything other than calories, because you can just as easily eat the same items without sugar and get full.

Therefore if you are serious about getting healthy start by changing what you eat for breakfast, and reap the rewards all year!

In exercise as in life, moderation pays

The famous Rabbi and Physician Maimonides once wrote the following: “The good actions are those that are balanced in the mean between two extremes, both of which are bad; one of them is an excess, the other a deficiency”  For people that have had heart trouble that exercise, apparently it’s even more true.

Scientist recently completed a study of exercise and have determined that people  who don’t exercise at all, as well as those that exercise seven days a week at a high level, are at increased risk for future heart trouble. The sedentary folks were expected, it is widely accepted that the less active are at risk for heart attacks. However the hyper fit apparently were also at higher risk for heart attacks, which was a surprise.

The actual study can be read here:

This finding puts me in a quandary. I really enjoy the intense exercise routine of running and lifting weights, but the facts are the facts. I for one, will be cutting back a bit. Of course, many people have the exact opposite problem, and being sedentary is still more dangerous than exercise.

The point is that Maimonides was correct, and being in the middle is the way to go with exercise, and so many other things. Besides, people often respect extremists, but does anybody really like them?  In this case it’s not only unwise, but perhaps even deadly.

Prunes- the regular miracle snack?

Prunes, I know, they are a bit funny. Maybe because they help when you are in  trouble. Just mention them and people tend to giggle. However, it just so happens that this dried fruit is a miracle snack. And who would have thought?

First off prunes no longer exist. They are now “dried plums” That’s because the prune council, in a Marketing move, changed the name. Who is the prune council anyhow, and do their spouses refer to them as ” the old prunes?”. It gets tough when your product becomes associated with the old and irregular, change approved!

So what is it about these little guys that is healthy anyhow? Well, plenty of research on that. First of all they are super high in Phenols, a form of antioxidant also found in wine. Phenols are now touted as a health miracle. They are great at preventing cancer, and are anti inflammatory as well. From heart disease to aging, get as much as you can.

Dried plums also have another very important attribute. They are very high in fiber. And here is a bit of research on that. Women that ate a diet high in fiber, specifically fiber from fruit(think dried plums) were 50 percent less likely to get breast cancer. Why? They have not gotten that far yet, my guess is a combination of factors. The antioxidants, the fiber, who knows what else? You get the idea.

So, the question still stands, why dried plums?

Well, it’s 11pm, and I am walking past the food cupboard…uh-oh, big mistake….but it happens. I peek in, what can I grab (literally) that’s a handful of something and is super healthy….. Basically nothing in a bag is as healthy, and soft, and sweet, as prunes.

PS- buy them in the big bags at places like Costco, with nothing added, and whatever you call them, and for whatever reason you eat them, prunes truly are the miracle snack!
